Chow Chow
Also known as: Chow, Songshi Quan (puffy-lion dog)
An ancient, lion-maned Chinese spitz with a distinctive blue-black tongue and a famously dignified, cat-like independence. Chow Chows are deeply loyal and devoted to their own people, offering a unique, quiet companionship - serious and self-possessed in character, yet affectionate with those they trust.
Origin and purpose
The Chow Chow is one of the oldest dog breeds, originating in China where it served variously as a guardian, hunter, cart-puller and, regrettably in some periods, a source of food and fur. Its lion-like ruff, stilted gait and blue-black tongue are breed hallmarks.
Temperament
Breed authorities describe the Chow as dignified, independent, reserved and loyal to its family but aloof with strangers — often likened to a cat in its self-possession. Early socialisation is important, and harsh handling backfires. As always, the individual dog and its raising shape behaviour far more than the breed label (Morrill et al., Science 2022), but prospective owners should expect an undemonstrative, strong-willed companion.

Ayuntamiento de Madrid
Spain abolished the national breed ban list in 2023 (Ley 7/2023 de Bienestar Animal), moving to a morphology/behaviour-based system. However, dogs previously classified as PPP (Perros Potencialmente Peligrosos — Rottweiler, Pit Bull, American Staffordshire Terrier, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Tosa Inu, Akita Inu, and dogs >20 kg with certain morphology) still require a PPP licence, liability insurance (minimum €120,000), muzzle in all public spaces and a maximum of one PPP dog per person. Madrid municipality may apply additional local enforcement — confirm with the Ayuntamiento de Madrid before acquiring a PPP breed.

Licensing
Mandatory municipal census canino (dog registration) at local Ayuntamiento de Madrid; microchip required under Real Decreto 1557/2011. Annual rabies vaccination not required for metropolitan Spain (Spain is rabies-free in mainland territory) but required for travel to non-EU countries. Climate & exercise in Barcelona
Barcelona is continental; hot dry summers (35–40°C July–August); cold winters (2–8°C December–January); low humidity year-round; spring and autumn mild and pleasant. walk dogs before 09:00 or after 20:00 in July–August; Madrid pavement in direct summer sun can reach 55°C — test with your hand for 7 seconds before walking; winter mornings can be near 0°C — check conditions before early morning walks. Madrid's dry continental heat is intense but lower humidity than tropical climates — paw burns on hot pavement are the #1 summer hazard; always test the ground before walking. Leishmania (canine leishmaniasis) is endemic in the Madrid Community sierra and periurban green spaces — consult your vet about preventive treatment and sandfly-repellent collar (e.g. Seresto, Scalibor) before spring. Winter cold (January lows near 0°C) can be uncomfortable for short-coated breeds on early morning walks.

Plan for year-round flea prevention recommended; tick season March–November (Ixodes ricinus, Dermacentor reticulatus in Madrid's sierra and periurban areas including Casa de Campo and Monte del Pardo); Leishmania risk in periurban Madrid and the Madrid Community sierra — sandfly season April–October, preventive treatment (collar or systemic) strongly recommended by AMVAC; heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) present in the Manzanares valley and Jarama River corridor — prevention recommended summer–autumn.
