The Labrador Retriever is the dog most people picture when they picture a dog: medium-large, even-tempered, endlessly willing and almost comically fond of food. That biddability is real and breed-typical, and it is why Labradors fill the world's guide-dog and assistance programmes. But the same appetite that makes them easy to train makes them the poster breed for canine obesity, and the same popularity that built a deep gene pool also produced an oversupply of poorly bred dogs with avoidable joint disease. A good Labrador is one of the easiest large dogs to live with; a badly bred, over-fed one is a vet bill waiting to happen.
History & origin
Despite the name, the breed comes from Newfoundland, not Labrador. Eighteenth- and nineteenth-century fishermen there used a smaller water dog — the St John's dog — to haul nets and retrieve fish from the icy Atlantic. British sportsmen who saw these dogs imported them and, through the kennels of the Earl of Malmesbury and others, refined them into a specialist waterfowl retriever: a dog that would sit steady, mark a falling bird, swim out through cold water and carry it back undamaged in a "soft mouth". Every modern Labrador trait — the love of water, the carrying instinct, the food drive that rewarded a working dog burning huge calories — traces to that job.
Temperament & personality
Labradors are widely described as outgoing, gentle and people-oriented, and they tend to greet strangers and other dogs as friends rather than threats. It is worth saying plainly what the evidence supports: breed is only a weak predictor of an individual dog's behaviour — a landmark genetic study found it explains roughly 9% of behavioural variation (Morrill et al., Science 2022). So treat "friendly Lab" as a tendency, not a guarantee, and judge the dog in front of you. What is reliably breed-typical is high food motivation and, in young dogs, exuberance: a Labrador adolescent is a large, bouncy, mouthy animal that needs training and outlets.

Training & behaviour
Few breeds are as rewarding to train. High biddability plus high food drive means reward-based training "clicks" quickly, which is exactly why Labradors dominate working roles. The flip side is that an under-exercised, under-trained Labrador channels that energy into jumping, counter-surfing, chewing and pulling. Start manners early, give the retrieving instinct a legitimate outlet (fetch, scent games, food puzzles), and never free-feed — the bowl is your best training tool.
Exercise needs
Plan on around 90 minutes of real activity a day for an adult: brisk walks, off-lead running where legal and safe, retrieving and, ideally, swimming — a Labrador in water is a Labrador in its element, and it is low-impact for the joints. Mental work matters as much as miles. In tropical and urban settings, exercise in the cool of early morning and late evening, carry water, and watch for overheating.
Grooming
Grooming is genuinely easy — a weekly brush, stepping up to several times a week during the twice-yearly heavy moults, plus routine ears, nails and teeth. There is no clipping. What there is, is hair: the dense double coat sheds constantly, so a Labrador is a poor choice for anyone seeking a low-shed or "hypoallergenic" dog. No breed is truly hypoallergenic, and a heavy shedder is the opposite end of that scale.
Nutrition & feeding
Weight control is the headline issue. Because many Labradors are genuinely hungrier than other dogs, owners must do the discipline the dog won't: weigh the food, feed to body condition rather than to the bag, fold treats into the daily ration, and re-check the waistline monthly. Keeping a Labrador lean is the single most effective thing you can do for its hips, elbows, cruciate ligaments and lifespan.

Exercise-induced collapse (EIC)
Exercise-induced collapse (EIC) is an inherited condition caused by a variant in the DNM1 gene in which strenuous exercise triggers progressive hind-limb weakness or collapse. A DNA test identifies carriers and affected dogs. Affected dogs can live normal lives with moderate exercise limits.
Progressive retinal atrophy (prcd-PRA)
Progressive retinal atrophy (prcd form) gradually destroys the retinal photoreceptors, eventually causing blindness. A DNA test is available; responsible breeders test before pairing to avoid producing affected offspring. The breed's most common everyday problems - obesity and ear infections - are both largely manageable by the owner.

A Labrador suits an active household that can give it real daily exercise, training and company, and that has the discipline to keep it slim. It is one of the best family dogs for children and a sound first large-breed dog. It is a poor fit for sedentary homes, for people wanting a low-shedding dog, or for anyone who finds it hard to say no to a begging face — this is a breed that will out-eat your willpower.

Licensing
Dog registration required under the Rabies Prevention Act (狂犬病予防法): one-time ward office registration fee ¥3,000 + annual rabies vaccination tag ~¥550. Microchipping mandatory for dogs sold from breeders/pet shops since June 2022 (Act on Welfare and Management of Animals).
Climate & exercise in Tokyo
Tokyo is humid subtropical; hot humid summers (Jul–Sep, avg 35°C+); mild winters (Dec–Feb, avg 10°C); cherry-blossom spring; typhoon season Aug–Oct. walk before 7am or after 7pm in July–September; Tokyo pavements reach 50–60°C in direct sun at midday — test with your hand before walking. Tokyo summers (July–September) are dangerously hot and humid; heatstroke is the #1 summer risk for dogs. Flat-faced breeds (French Bulldog, Shih Tzu, Pug) and double-coated breeds face the highest risk. Tokyo urban heat island effect means temperatures stay high overnight — do not rely on evening walks alone in heatwave conditions.
Parasite prevention
Plan for Heartworm prevention essential May–November (Aedes albopictus and Culex tritaeniorhynchus active); tick prevention recommended for dogs accessing Okutama, Takao-san, Tanzawa and other Kanto forest areas year-round.

Labradors carry a genetic variant (POMC deletion) that disrupts the off-switch for hunger — around 23% of UK pet Labs carry at least one copy, making them significantly more food-motivated than other breeds (Raffan et al., Cell Metabolism 2016).
The breed's "soft mouth" — the ability to carry objects without puncturing them — was specifically selected for retrieving undamaged game; many Labs extend this instinct to greeting visitors with a toy.
Labradors consistently score among the highest of any breed on C-BARQ trainability and attachment scales, underpinning their widespread use as guide, assistance, and detection dogs (Serpell & Duffy, C-BARQ dataset).
Despite the short appearance, Labradors have a dense water-resistant double coat — an adaptation for retrieving waterfowl in cold Newfoundland waters — that sheds heavily twice a year and repels light rain.

Nutrition note: The single most important health intervention for a Labrador is weight control. Around a quarter carry a POMC deletion that blunts satiety and drives food-seeking, and obesity worsens hip, elbow and cruciate disease. Feed measured meals, weigh the food, count treats into the daily ration, and keep the dog at a lean body-condition score of 4–5/9.

A large, genetically diverse breed by pedigree-dog standards; the Kennel Club reports a breed-average coefficient of inbreeding around 6.6%, low relative to most pedigree breeds (purebred average roughly 20%). Popular-sire effects remain the main diversity risk.
