Accident & illness

Oyen Dog Insurance — Basic

Oyen (underwritten by MSIG Malaysia / Zurich General Takaful)

Oyen's entry-level dog tier gives genuine accident + illness cover (surgery, diagnostics, hospitalisation) with any-clinic reimbursement and no medical exam to join — a low-friction on-ramp in a market Oyen effectively dominates. The RM3,500 annual cap is modest against a RM8,000+ emergency, and the co-payment model means owners always share the bill.

Annual limit
RM 3,500/year (vet bills) — CONFIRM (tier limit from comparison sources; RM499/yr tier)
Co-pay
Co-payment options 10% / 30% / 50% (higher co-pay = lower premium); "up to 90% reimbursement" = 10% co-pay — CONFIRM per tier
Indicative premium
RM 499/year (~RM48.45/month) — CONFIRM exact tier premium
  • Low entry premium
  • No medical exam
  • Covers surgery + diagnostics
  • RM3,500 cap is low vs a real emergency
  • Congenital/hereditary excluded

Oyen Dog Insurance — Plus

Oyen (underwritten by MSIG Malaysia / Zurich General Takaful)

The mid-tier Plus roughly doubles the annual cap to RM8,000 — enough to meaningfully cover a typical major surgery — and adds a RM1,000 burial/cremation benefit. It keeps the same easy no-exam onboarding and co-payment flexibility, making it Oyen's balanced middle option for most dog owners.

Annual limit
RM 8,000/year (vet bills) — CONFIRM (RM649/yr tier)
Co-pay
10% / 30% / 50% options — CONFIRM
Indicative premium
RM 649/year — CONFIRM
  • RM8,000 cap covers a typical big surgery
  • Burial/cremation benefit
  • No medical exam; flexible co-pay
  • Co-payment on every claim
  • Congenital/hereditary still excluded

Oyen Dog Insurance — Champion

Oyen (underwritten by MSIG Malaysia / Zurich General Takaful)

Champion is Oyen's flagship dog plan with the market's typical top cap of RM10,000/year, plus burial/cremation and third-party liability — the closest thing to comprehensive cover in Malaysia's thin market. It's still a reimbursement/co-payment model with congenital and hereditary conditions excluded, so read the sub-limits before assuming a single RM10,000 pot.

Annual limit
RM 10,000/year (vet bills) — highest dog cover Oyen offers
Co-pay
10% / 30% / 50% options; up to 90% reimbursement — CONFIRM
Indicative premium
RM 799/year — CONFIRM
  • Highest dog limit in market (RM10,000)
  • Burial + TPL included
  • No medical exam; strong brand & claims track record
  • Congenital/hereditary excluded
  • Co-payment on every claim

MSIG Pet Insurance

MSIG Insurance (Malaysia) Bhd

MSIG's own-brand pet product is the main traditional-insurer alternative to Oyen, notable mainly for a higher RM100,000 third-party liability limit. Its RM5,000 annual vet cap is below Oyen's mid and top tiers, it's annual-pay only, and several policy specifics (co-pay, waiting period, premium) need confirmation against MSIG's PDS. Note: the figures here come from a competitor's (Oyen's) comparison page — treat with caution and verify on MSIG Malaysia's own site or an Insurnet / PolicyStreet product page.

Annual limit
Up to RM 5,000/year (vet coverage) — lower than Oyen's tiers
Co-pay
CONFIRM — not clearly published
Indicative premium
CONFIRM — annual payment only (no monthly option reported)
  • Large established underwriter
  • Higher TPL (RM100,000)
  • Available through multiple aggregators
  • Lower RM5,000 vet cap than Oyen Plus/Champion
  • Annual payment only

How to choose a pet insurance plan

The cheapest premium is rarely the best value. When comparing, look past the headline price at the parts that decide what you actually get back:

  • Annual limit — the most the plan pays per year. Higher limits matter for surgery and chronic illness.
  • Co-payment / co-insurance — the share of every bill you still pay. Often rises with your pet's age at enrolment.
  • Deductible / excess — a fixed amount deducted per claim or per year.
  • Exclusions — pre-existing, hereditary, dental and routine/preventive care are commonly excluded.
  • Waiting periods — illness cover usually starts weeks after you sign up.
  • Lifetime renewal — whether cover continues as your pet ages (crucial for older dogs).

Insuring a pet while young and healthy usually locks in lower co-payment and avoids pre-existing exclusions later. If your pet already has a condition, check exactly how each insurer treats it before buying.
