Bred for the Cold, Living on the Equator
Huskies, Samoyeds and Chow Chows are among Singapore's most-photographed dogs — and among its most physiologically challenged. What thermoregulation science tells us about the island's love of cold-climate breeds.
It is a Saturday morning at Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park and a Siberian Husky is reclining in the shade of a tembusu tree with all the studied nonchalance of a creature that knows it is being watched. Its owner, a woman in her thirties, has brought a portable water bowl, a cooling mat rolled under one arm, and what appears to be a purpose-built ice pack that fits around the dog's neck. The Husky is magnificent. It is also, by every measure of canine physiology, in the wrong postcode.
Singapore sits at 1.3 degrees north of the equator. The National Environment Agency (NEA) recorded a mean annual temperature of 27.9°C for the island in 2023, with daily highs frequently reaching 33°C or above and humidity that rarely drops below 70 per cent. The Siberian Husky was selectively bred over millennia by the Chukchi people of northeastern Siberia to pull sleds in sub-zero temperatures. The Samoyed was developed on the Siberian tundra. The Chow Chow originated in northern China where winters are harsh. These are not tropical dogs. Understanding why so many of them end up in Singapore — and what that means for their bodies — requires a short detour through the biology of heat.
How dogs keep cool (and why it is harder for some breeds)
Dogs are obligate panters. Unlike humans, who dissipate roughly 80 per cent of excess body heat through sweating across a large skin surface, dogs rely almost entirely on evaporative cooling through the respiratory tract. When a dog pants, air moves rapidly over the moist surfaces of the tongue, throat, and nasal passages; water evaporates; heat leaves the body. The system is elegant and, in temperate climates, adequate. In Singapore's combination of high ambient temperature and high relative humidity, it becomes profoundly less efficient.
Evaporative cooling works by moving water molecules from a liquid surface into the surrounding air. When that air is already saturated with moisture — as it routinely is in Singapore, where relative humidity averages 84 per cent in the morning — the capacity for further evaporation is sharply curtailed. A panting Husky in 32°C heat and 85 per cent humidity is working its respiratory muscles hard for a fraction of the cooling it would achieve in the same effort at 10°C.
Cold-climate breeds compound this problem in two ways. First, their coats: the Husky's double coat — a dense, insulating undercoat beneath a water-resistant outer layer — was engineered to trap body heat in Arctic conditions. That same engineering works in reverse in the tropics, slowing heat transfer from the skin surface to the environment. Second, their anatomy: brachycephalic (flat-faced) cold-climate breeds such as the Chow Chow have upper airways that are structurally narrower, further reducing panting efficiency. The Royal Veterinary College's VetCompass programme, which analyses veterinary clinical records from practices across the UK and internationally, identified a thick double coat as a risk factor for heat-related illness in dogs.

The VetCompass data on heatstroke
The most rigorous epidemiology on canine heatstroke comes from the RVC VetCompass programme. A 2020 study by Emily Hall and colleagues, drawing on records from over 900,000 dogs in the UK, found that the most commonly recorded heatstroke cases involved outdoor exertion in warm conditions — a pattern directly applicable to dogs walked during Singapore's midday hours. The case-fatality rate in that dataset was 14 per cent; for dogs that presented with neurological signs, it was higher still.
Singapore's ambient temperatures routinely exceed the 25°C threshold the same research identified as the point above which heatstroke risk climbs steeply. The island sits not at the upper end of that risk gradient, but well beyond it. Every day.
Arctic double-coated breeds face the steepest challenge in Singapore's year-round heat and humidity. The Singapore Special — the island's own short-coated, locally adapted mixed breed — sits at the opposite end of this spectrum.
Why Singaporeans buy them anyway
The popularity of cold-climate breeds in tropical Asian cities is not irrational. It is driven by aesthetics, social signalling, breed prestige, and — increasingly — social media. The Husky's blue eyes and wolf-like colouring are among the most photographed dog features on Instagram in Southeast Asia. The Samoyed's white fluffiness has become a shorthand for aspirational softness that performs well on video. Welfare organisations including the SPCA Singapore have noted that large northern breeds are among the more frequently surrendered dogs in the city-state, with owners citing difficulty managing exercise needs and heat in HDB flats. The SPCA's annual statistics document this pattern, though specific breed-level breakdowns are not publicly disaggregated.
The owners who make it work — and those who don't
Many Singapore owners of cold-climate breeds manage the thermal challenge with genuine rigour. Air-conditioned homes are the baseline — not a luxury, but a physiological requirement. Walks are timed to before 8 a.m. or after 7 p.m., when ambient temperatures drop into the high twenties. Cooling mats, elevated beds for airflow underneath, and chilled water bowls are standard kit. Some owners have invested in purpose-built cooling coats that use wet fabric and reflective surfaces to accelerate heat loss. Veterinary check-ups are more frequent, and the early signs of heat exhaustion — excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, reddened gums — are watched for carefully.
But there is another population of owners for whom the management burden was not fully anticipated at the point of purchase. The decision to bring a cold-climate dog into an equatorial city is a commitment to a specific, demanding management regimen for the entirety of the dog's life — one that involves continuous active intervention against a climate that will never moderate.
What the science recommends
The American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) and the British Veterinary Association (BVA) have both issued guidance on brachycephalic and heat-sensitive breeds broadly applicable to tropical climates: no outdoor exercise in temperatures above 25°C, immediate shade and water access, and familiarity with the three-stage progression from heat stress to heat exhaustion to heatstroke. The WSAVA's Global Veterinary Community has flagged that heatstroke can progress to multi-organ failure within 30 minutes of onset, making rapid recognition and cooling critical.
A case for climate-honest breed choice
None of this argues that no northern breed should live in Singapore. It argues for honesty. A Husky in Singapore is not a low-maintenance pet. It is an animal whose baseline physiological comfort requires active, daily intervention, year after year, in a climate that will never meet it halfway. That is a legitimate choice. It should just be a conscious one — made with open eyes, and made before the dog arrives, not after.
